Members receive free RNLI publications including The Lifeboat, RNLI Compass and Offshore for those who actively enjoy the sea. Other benefits include free sea safety advice and product discounts, an RNLI membership card giving access to the RNLI’s College in Poole and the opportunity to attend the RNLI’s Annual Presentation of Awards.

In a special event at the RNLI College in Poole on Thursday 20th October 2011 the official partnership agreement was formally signed on behalf of the RNLI by James Vaughan, Corporate Services Director and Andrew Smith, Vice President Sales & Marketing Operations, Yamaha Motor Europe NV.

The new partnership will allow the RNLI and Yamaha to work together to jointly promote the charity’s fundraising efforts. The first visible sign of this came at the 2011 PSP Southampton International Boat Show where an RNLI Atlantic inshore lifeboat was moored on one of Yamaha’s berths in the Marina, while RNLI fundraisers were stationed on Yamaha’s main boat stand a short distance away.

The new partnership is a natural progression of the existing supply relationship between Yamaha and the RNLI. The charity has been using Yamaha outboards on various rescue craft for over 15 years. More recently the company has not only specified Yamaha WaveRunner VX personal watercraft for RNLI lifeguard beach rescue, but also selected the F115 outboard to power the charity’s fleet of Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboats.

Yamaha have always been proud to supply equipment and products to the RNLI knowing that these engines and personal watercraft were chosen by the RNLI because of their engineering quality, design and reliability. After all when RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew and lifeguards put to sea for a rescue they need to rely completely on their equipment.

David Pougher, Divisional Manager of Yamaha UK Marine Division commented “It’s great to be able to give something back to the RNLI whilst at the same time offering a benefit to our customers with this free membership package. As boaters we all rely on the fact that the RNLI will come to our aid if required when at sea, even in treacherous weather conditions, and this partnership will help support the RNLI and their fundraising activities.”

2011 K38 International PWC Awards Program

<span style="color: black; It was very interesting seeing some different RWC derived products but it amazes me why people choose to use wave jumping images in their promo material.

For the past 5 years we have been trying to promote Personnel Watercraft or Rescue Watercraft through the 'K38 Way' of training. A massive component of Shawn Alladios training focuses on discipline. We have at our finger tips an enormously powerful tool (not a toy) capable of speeds in excess of 55 mph.
It is extremely rare that in a rescue capacity we would ever touch these speeds as we run the risk of injuring ourselves, crew and any casualties we have on board.

I think it is fair to say that the negative stereo type associated with these craft is the reason why emergency service managers are often reluctant to even consider them. I hear about the 'worries' managers have regarding the craft and how their personnel will always be 'on a jolly' that because they are powerful machines 'staff will get injured'. These fears are credible but with a correct training structure that K38 delivers and strong project management injuries will be minimised.

So why do suppliers and commercial users promote what they do with pictures and videos of the craft wave jumping and driving fast, doing donuts and chucking loads of spray. Is this not the type of operating that we try to avoid? Is this not the image that concerns the people with the purse strings.

In commercial applications wave jumping shouldnt happen, it puts the operator, crew, victim(s) and other water users at risk from injury. It is a sign that the operator isn't in control and doesnt fully understand craft dynamics.

Whislt it may look good, surely it is not the best way to promote such a strong rescue tool.

Suited and Booted for Seaworx

K38 UK have been invited to join Yamaha Motors UK at Seaworx Commercial Marine Exhibition and Forum (www.seawork.com) as part of a joint commercial users project. The beauty hides many dangers that the unsuspecting visitors on rare occasion, unwittingly fall foul. The estuary leads into Morecombe bay an area that has been associated with its own tragedy. Not to make it sound a location of doom and gloom, there are many thousands of visitors who come to the area and don’t even get their wellington boots stuck. But for those that do get stuck in the mud, sink in the quicksand or get caught by the bore the local volunteer rescue services strive to ensure the visitors leave.

The Arnside Coastguard team have the task of being on call waiting for their pagers to sound or vibrate ready to answer the often complicated call for help. With an all terrain vehicle the Argo Cat to deal with mud and quicksand and a Yamaha Waverunner for the water, the team are one of the most well equipped in the country.

K38 UK is proud to deliver the teams PWC rescue training as HM Coastguards preferred supplier we had honour of delivering the K38 Way to the second group of HM Coastguard Volunteers.

The Arnside team have embraced the PWC after their General Purpose Boat was removed from service. The team members are passionate and committed to their job patrolling and responding to the emergencies along the estuary. K38 UK is privileged to be part of this unprecedented HM Coastguard project.

Jetskier rescued from Douglas Bay

A surf rescue team from Douglas Coastguard was scrambled this morning (Saturday) after a jetskier hit problems in Douglas Bay.
He was washed onto the beach in heavy conditions shortly before midday after the Coastguard Marine Operations Centre was alerted.
Coastguard Officers checked the man for injuries but he survived his ordeal unscathed. The Arnside team are the first Coastguard unit to utilise a PWC (Personal Watercraft) or Jet Ski as they are more commonly referred to and K38 UK (www.k38uk.com) provided the bespoke training program for the team tailored to suit the difficult conditions they face.

The Arnside Rescue Boat was taken out of service but it soon became apparent that a more suitable replacement was needed. After K38 UK successfully completed a series of trial days at Arnside the watercraft was deemed suitable for the location and the wheels were set in motion to get the first members of the team trained. Thanks must go to the Coastguard team of Chris Turner, Davy Thompson and Richard Hackwell who have helped get the PW at Arnside.

Arnside sits on the Kent Estuary, which is a very dynamic stretch of water with numerous different environmental factors combining to create treacherous conditions. The combination of huge tidal flows and quick sand test the local HM Coastguard team who are on call to deal with emergency situations.

The team are utilising a Yamaha Waverunner fitted with a rescue board which at low tide can be operated in the very shallow waters but is also suited to the high speed (swiftwater) conditions seen at high tide. On Spring tides when the water flow is at it strongest and water levels reach their highest and a wave is produced known as a 'Tidal bore' that travels up the estuary with the incoming tide. The 'bore' is popular with canoeist who attempt to ride the river wave and unfortunately one such canoeist got into difficulties, for more details follow the link below.

http://www.mcga.gov.uk/c4mca/mcga07-home/newsandpublications/press-releases.htm?id=75EF52C49E87FB39&m=9&y=2009

Ryan Levinson-Nationally Ranked PWC Offshore Challenged Racer

LB2CAT 2009 National PWC Offshore Championships, July 12, 2009

AWA H2O Responder Member inspires the Challenged PWC division to be created for others to follow in his wake. I was mostly trying to think of ways to mitigate the impact that was having on my leg fatigue.

Why did you choose the boat you raced?
It was better suited for choppy water. Thank you Shawn for loaning the boat.

What time did you wake up!
3am.

2 Hours out of the race, what were you doing?
Driving up from San Diego.

1 Hour out of the race what were you doing?
Kitting up, packing my race ski with the necessary safety gear.

What was your first thought when you picked your position in the lineup for the start? What were you looking for?
I was looking for a clean line. Didn't get one.

As the start went off, and you passed the Queens Gate (harbor mouth) What was going through your mind?
I pegged it but still watched everyone blaze away from me. I thought "crap, I'm WAY underpowered..."

Then I hit all the cross chop from the wakes and thought "I'm glad this boat likes it rough".

After passing Queens Gate I just looked for dark water and settled into a groove.

How was the first 10 miles of the race for you?
Routine.

Almost too easy but I enjoyed the ride.

WOT pretty much the entire time. I felt like I could have handled more power.

Basically just relaxed into a rhythm and drove a straight line to Catalina as fast as possible... I think with more experience I might be able to get a little more speed out of that boat by doing a better job keeping the pump hooked up. There was a lot of leg fatigue but that's how it goes.

When you came to the turnaround boat, how were you feeling? How was your boat doing in those conditions?
I felt fine. Legs were fatigued, as expected, but when I'm racing I tend to just absorb the pain so unless I collapse it's not an issue.

My legs only buckled a handful of times throughout the race.

Half Way back did you hit a psychological or physical wall?
No, not really. My physical 'wall' is sort of always there, so it's not like I suddenly hit it.

Half way back I was mostly scrambling to find any possible way to get the boat to move faster.

The only mental blip was when I watched a column of five boats off my port beam steer a course about 5-10 degrees higher than my line.

I was trying to figure out why they were doing that. In the end I trusted my GPS and it proved to be the right decision.

It saved some real time. Many of the riders in that group were on supercharged boats and were well ahead of me at the turnaround but I closed the gap significantly by the finish.

All in all I enjoyed the second half more than the first half mainly because I got to battle a bit.

Any mechanicals failures?
None. Shawn Alladio, Mark Gerner, Aaron Cress and crew did an amazing job prepping the ski. Much thanks and respect!

Did you have any 'Battles' during the race with other competitors you especially enjoyed?
Yeah. I didn't know who it was at the time but Mike Arnold was at the tail end of the column that split away on the way back.

There was also some guy posting off my starboard quarter following my rhumb line. He would close then I would pull away then we would close and so on.

As we approached the Gate a large ship started moving across the channel opening. The "lost column" was coming in from slightly above the gate so they mostly pinched across the ship's bow.

A few riders, including me and my shadow, decided to pass astern.

Going astern was, in my opinion, the best choice (for a bunch of reasons).

The fun part was watching the less experienced riders begin their approach by aiming well astern of the ship and then ending up riding a large arc as the ship continued to move forward. From experience I knew to aim more amidship and ride a more direct line towards the finish as the ship moved across out of my way.

This put me ahead of a few faster boats who then quickly passed me as they pulled throttle in the calm inner water.

Sponsors:

The Challenged Athletes Foundation http://www.challengedathletes.orm

Operation Rebound http://www.operationrebound.org

K38 WaterSafety http://k38watersafety.com

Sea-Doo http://www.sea-doo.com

for a complete list please visit my website http://www.ryanlevinson.com

What advice would you give to recruit other racers to this event?
A huge rookie mistake on the way to the island was turning back to check on a rider I passed who was sitting on a disabled ski. The rider was conscious and had their helmet off.

They didn't look to be in any immediate danger, but I made the decision to go back and make sure.

As I approached the rider one of the K38 safety boats drove up and signaled that they were on it (good job Justin!) but by that point I had lost at least a minute, possibly more.

That mistake cost me at least a few places which is competitively significant when you consider that the winner of my division was only a handful of places ahead of me in the overall.

On the other hand, I'm glad that I made the decision I did with the information I had at the time.

When you are unsure of someone's status, and you have skills that may help, I think it's better to default towards "helping" rather than just driving by and hoping no one is getting burned.

A good friend recently reenforced that lesson through her own actions...

But the same good friend told me I was idiot all things considered for going back during the race.

Anything else you want to comment on?
If I had the words to express the depth of my gratitude and respect for Shawn Alladio, Mark Gerner, Mike Arnold, and the rest of the PWCOffshore.com team I'd write them here.

These are the people who made it possible for me to experience LB2CAT as a racer and not just some guy riding a ski across the channel.

Thank you to Ross at RPM Enterprises for embracing the Challenged Athlete division.

Thank you to Sea-Doo, Bombardier.

Thanks to Jason Johnson from Watercraft World Magazine.

Deep respect to my fellow Challenged Athletes, in PWC racing and other sports, who are stepping, hopping, and wheeling to the line to prove that there is a place for 'us' in competitive sports.

I was stoked and inspired by the incredible aloha shared within the PWC family. type='text'>TWO PEOPLE THROWN FROM JET SKI

Portland Coastguard have been co-ordinating assistance this evening to the two occupants of a red jet ski which capsized off Southbourne beach near Groyne 50, just past the pier.

The jet ski riders were thrown into the water and immediately began shouting and screaming for help whilst holding on to the upturned hull. Fortunately they were wearing lifejackets but were drifting whilst holding onto the quickly submerging vessel. Various public spirited members of the public immediately phoned the coastguard using 999.

The Poole inshore lifeboat was immediately asked to assist and the Southbourne Coastguard Rescue Team were sent to the beach. An ambulance was also called.

The weather at the time was strong winds force 6 increasing to gale force 8 with good visibility.

One person soon made it ashore, but it quickly became apparent that another person who was in the water could not swim and was clinging onto the upturned hull.

The Poole inshore lifeboat then managed to retrieve the individual from the water and both were taken to Bournemouth hospital by ambulance for check up.

Allan Norman, Watch Manager at Portland Coastguard said

The crew of the inshore lifeboat and our own Coastguard Rescue Team have now managed to secure the drifting jet ski. The two Polish occupants seems to have been suffering from hypothermia, and with the water at around 11 degrees Celsius at present it does not take a long immersion in water for such a condition to set in. Fortunately both people were wearing lifejackets which no doubt contributed towards their successful rescue, particularly for the non swimmer!

This also follows recent incidents where various other Polish people have got into difficulty along the coastline whether falling from cliffs, or undergoing problems at the shoreline or in the water.

We would reiterate our central message that by dialing 999 and asking for the Coastguard we can get assistance to you as quickly as possible. For other details such as tide times or weather conditions then a call to our Ops Room on 01305 760439 and we will be able to advise you on your planned trip.

www.mcga.gov.uk

The Day We Left Arnside

K38 UK instructor Ben Granata was packing up the K38 Training Kit after the successful class with the HM Coastguard, when the earth began to shake (official news of CG training to follow soon). The area in which they were training was approximately 600 metres away from the nearest road, and so the Rescue Water Craft they were using for the training was deployed to collect a rescue stretcher and medical supplies, and the casualty was carried by the team to a waiting ambulance from North West Ambulance Service.
Richard Hackwell, HM Coastguard Technical Rescue Consultant was assisting with the training, along with Ben Granata of K38 UK.

Richard said:

Rescue Water Craft are increasingly being used for safety and rescue in a wide variety of water conditions, with the team being trained in their use on Saturday afternoon afternoon. The team performed well, effectively utilising the new craft and demonstrating its capabilities in the challenging operating conditions of the Kent Estuary. The craft certainly proved its worth and was crucial to Saturday afternoons rescue, and Im confident it will be an invaluable asset in the busy summer months.

Chris Turner, Fylde Sector Manager, HM Coastguard said:
With many more people choosing to holiday in the UK this year we are prepared for a busy summer, and the new Rescue Water Craft will enhance our ability to deliver search and rescue around the coast. If you are visiting the coast this summer and you spot anyone in danger, always dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Posted By: Rosie Tapping

For further details contact:
The Maritime & Hosted by Merseyside Fire and Rescue on the Menai Strait K38 UK Instructor Ben Granata demonstrated the rescue capabilities of a Personal Watercraft (PWC) fitted with a rescue board (often referred to as a Rescue Watercraft or RWC).

[/IMG]

Approximately 40 F&R personnel from 8 different brigades took part in the training workshop held in the stunning countryside along the Menai Stait which separates mainland Wales from the island of Anglesey.

[IMG][/IMG]

Not only did K38 UK deliver basic training sessions to the Fire and Rescue Personnel who attended this Swift water and boat handling training workshop but Ben Granata K38 UK Instructor also provided safety cover for the night search operation and an exercise with a Sea King Helicopter.

Personal Watercraft or Rescue Watercraft as they are referred to in a rescue capacity are a valuable Swiftwater and Flood rescue tool but are often overlooked due to the stigma that surrounds these unique craft. K38 International offers a recognised and respected training program that is delivered throughout the world by a dedicated team of International Affiliates. K38 founder Shawn Alladio has dedicated her life to developing and implementing rescue training using PWC’s and recently celebrated her 20th anniversary working with many rescue agency’s both in the USA and worldwide. The network of K38 International Affiliates deliver the high standard of training developed by Shawn Alladio to rescue professional in both Ocean and swiftwater/flood environments. The ‘K38 Way’ of training was developed by Alladio from her real world rescue experiences and over 30 years of operating Personal Watercraft. Each year the K38 International Affiliates attend a K38 International Summit where they develop training and rescue techniques to continually keep the ‘K38 Way’ up to date with latest changes in craft design and equipment available to a rapidly developing rescue market.

The culmination of the session on the Menai Strait was a training exercise with an RAF Sea King Helicopter. K38 UK provided a safety presence whilst the Sea King winch man was lifted on and off the inflatable boats. It was the curiosity of the Sea King crew as to whether it was possible to lift a person from a PWC that saw K38 UK Instructor Ben Granata pick up the Sea King Winch man for a briefing on how to correctly position himself and safety considerations whilst working with a PWC’s.

The winch man reciprocated with the equivalent safety information and the exercise was underway. The task was completed successfully on the first attempt however there are very few images available because the inflatable boat couldn’t match the speed of the PWC .

First K38 UK Tow Surf Operator Course Dates Announced: February 19th, 20th, 21st

In our home, Cornwall we have been blessed with some massive swells that have been made extra special as the usual ravaging winds have on occasion subsided. In heavy seas, the water would wash over the boat and so one or more natives would do constant bailing. Others would be paddling together on command to reach their destination in the shortest time and catching a wave made the crossing faster.THEME: SETTING NATIONAL STANDARDS FOR BOATING EDUCATION IN HAWAI'I
VIEWS OF NTSB, HAWAI'I LEGISLATORS, DOCARE, OCEAN SAFETY, K38 'OHANAARE WE CONTRIBUTORS FOR BOATING EDUCATION TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF OUR COMMUNITIES?
· Commencement Introduction
· National Boating Education Standards in Hawai’i: NTSB Speaker, Mr. Bill Gossard
· Protecting the beaches, boat based concerns, response, education and training: Mr. Archie Kalepa, Mr. Pake Ah Mow
· Law Enforcement Applications (RWC/PWC)-Shawn Alladio
· Lunch
· HEAVY WATER- Mr. Darrick Doerner- The beginning: Towsurfing, Results, Issues, Concerns and Solutions
· K38 Appreciations
· Summit Closing- Mahalo!
Kanalu K38 Instructor Course (Invitation Only)
Wednesday-Friday, December 10-11th, 2008Day One 9:00am to 5:00pm (on water)Day Two 9:00am to 5:00pm (Mandatory K38 Meeting: International Updates)
K38 Summit December 12th, 2004INSTRUCTORS/AFFILIATES Excursion (all day)

I mohala no ka lehua i ke ke'ekehi 'ia e ka ua.
Translation: The Lehua blossom unfolds when the rains tread on it.(Better to have a gentle touch to encourage growth)
www.kanalu-k38.com

Inland Flood Rescue Association

IFRA (www.floodrescueuk.com) is an Association formed to give the UK’s independent Volunteer teams a national voice. With 6 students there is always a need to remain focused on what we are trying to achieve but fortunately one of the students was a good friend of ours Al Mennie. Al and his tow partner Andrew Cotty trained with us a couple of years ago and since then continue to challenge some of europes most challenging waves using the 'K38 Way' of operating a PWC. Its very rewarding seeing a student after 2 years of using the K38 operating techniques confidently operate a PW with control and technical ability.

So joining us was Paul Banks AKA 'Occy' or the 'Angry Ewok' from Era Adventures a company K38 UK is working with more and more when providing event safety cover. Along with two representatives from Hayle Harbour who utilize a PWC for patrol (one of the few if not the only Harbour in the UK to do so) the final two participants were from Merseyside Fire and Rescue. The Marine Unit has two Yamaha FX HO for rescue and joined K38 UK to review the course as a training platform for the rest of the unit. The structure of the course was a day on in the class room followed by a day and night on the water and the final day looking at surf handling and rescue techniques.

K38 UK has been asked to present a lecture along with a demonstration of the how effective PWC's are in water rescue in January 2009 at Merseyside Fire and Rescue Training Workshop.

Help find Jeremy

Jeremy has been missing in Bali after losing contact with his friends after going on PWC trip between Islands.

There are many news reports which you can find on the web however there is a fund setup to continue the amazing work of the the Balinese SAR teams etc.

Here is the link to fund

http://jeremyhoylandrescue.myblogsite.com/

Lets keep up the positivity and support for everyone involved in the search and for Jeremy and his family.

In Memory of Igor Oralov

Igor was riding a friends super stock 3 seater Aquabike and in a fast turn, he lost control and flew off the PWC and hit a seawall, he died from the serious impact. Igor was working as the Chief Course Marshal for the Russian Motor Sport Federation Aquabike Championships in Moscow. The race event was held at the Olympic rowing location. He was born on June 13, 1969, he was 39 years old.

Igor came to our K38 International Safety Summit that was held in Fregene, Italy near Rome. Fabio Annigoni who runs K38 Italy had been working for several years training course marshals in Russia for their Federation, and Igor was the lead person, highly seasoned and well liked by all.

Igor attended our summit and the K38 Russia connection was born, if not over a bottle of Vodka, perhaps we throw in some pasta, pesto, clams and bread, gosh we ate a lot! Igor came with Sergey Lisitsyn we talked about Russian Olympic athletes, our love for education and programs for boating, how highly respected Igor was in his field, since he spoke no English Sergey translated, and we all got along with hand gestures and smiles, no communication errors.

When it came to our training, it was all body and sign language as we spent 7 days together. The evenings we cut loose and the discussions about fine Italian wines versus the pleasures of Russian Vodka became diplomatic urgency. Vodka won. We had so much fun, those kind of memories carry us into old age and I'm sure our family members will be wondering what we are mumbling about when Alzheimers sets in and we begin long ago conversations with our Russian friends!

Two weeks ago I brought out my folder of K38 Summit images. I stopped on one of Igor staring back at me, I leaned back and smiled. I began thinking of what he is doing back home, how is Sergey, how is their season going? Today I received a call from Fabio, I immediately asked him 'Heya Fabio how is Igor? What is he doing". We were on Skype on video call, and my daughter Kyla was listening.

Fabio started to mumble. I turned the volume up. In the background Kyla said 'mom he said he is dead'. I said to Fabio, 'He's bad?? What do you mean he's bad?'. Fabio repeats 'dead, dead' in his heavy accent. I looked at my computer screen and my face stares back at me, stunned, I grab my head, like so many people in disbelief when they hear that someone they loved or knew is dead, simply dead. It sinks in and a barrage of questions begin, Fabio is very saddened and the communication trails off.

So how do we choose to remember those who have died tragically? As the shock wears off, the anger sets in, and the reality is firm, searching for old pictures, connecting with friends, connecting with anything that is familiar and unknown, we simply grieve. Igor I know helped a lot of people, it is a fact. It is one more feather in his crown. He was passionate about his love affair with Aquabikes, this I know and another feather to his dedicated service. He trusted our training knowledge enough to embrace it as his own, and his crown is almost full, others will fill in vast pieces. I know how much Igor was looking forward to the races, that was our common bond.

I write back to Fabio, he says that nobody wanted me to be upset about this, and that is understandable, the guys are always protecting me, for reasons others would not understand, so no judgment from that. Almost a month has passed since Igor left, but I already sensed it intuitively, he was visiting my memories and my unconscious already.

I was looking forward to seeing Igor and Sergey at our K38 Summit in Hawai'i this December and was nudging Fabio to get them to come to the IJSBA World Finals in Havasu.

The rule is every K38 international has to bring something familiar and well known from their region for our gatherings. So the Portuguese bring Sausage and cheese and compete with the Italians and the Spaniards bring wine and sausage and compete with everyone and the Brits bring tea (HAHA), and the Ruskies bring Vodka, and the french unbelievable wine and Chocolate and so on and we have a big food blitz!

I will bring a bottle of Vodka to World Finals and when the K38 Family gathers we shall all drink a toast to our friend Igor! I remember Sergey telling me all about Stoleshnikov vodka, the man behind the mix and the weapons and the magic of storytelling unfolds. I shall have to find a bottle, I remember Igor nodding earnestly in agreement!

Salut my friend!
Their team transit across the channel landed them early to refuel their personal watercraft for the trip home later that afternoon. Tom has crossed all the channels of Hawai'i on very different types of watercraft, a jetski, canoe, a windsurfer, swam, paddled on a surfboard than anyone else alive today. He prefers to travel by water rather than going by plane, and also the economics are complimentary. It is his rightful Hawai'ian heritage to follow his ancestral transits. Darrick's pedigree as a waterman of legendary status is world renowned.

Pohaku and Darricks Waverunners tied off on Molokai's inside Harbor

This is Tom's lifestyle, it is who he is as a native, he is comfortable out there, he knows the currents, where he is going. He doesn't cross it for grandstanding. He does this because it is his mode of transportation, he is using a modern craft. "In respect to the PWC restrictions, eleven foot craft are allowed to cross these channels with less capabilities, slower speeds and not as safe versus a well educated and prepared personal watercraft operator" adds Tom.

There are at least 40 personal watercraft on the island of Molokai unofficially . One person has been ticketed, other than Tom Stone and Darrick Doerner who received 4 violations total to attend this public meeting. Tom and Darrick left for attendees the PWCSafetyschool.com cards for Hawai'ian boater education. http://www.pwcsafetyschool.com/hawaii/index.html

Mitchel Pauole Community Center DLNR PWC meeting

Legalizing jet ski riding would require a change to the administrative rules of the Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DBOR). This process would require various public hearings on a draft rule change. In addition approval by the Board of Land and Natural Resources, review by the Small Business Regulatory Review Board and Department of the Attorney General, and final signature by the Governor, before the new rules can take effect. There is a petition that is circulating by residents to revoke the PWC ban that is currently in affect. This meeting was due to the concerns of local residents who want access to use their vessel of choice, a personal watercraft, referred to in Hawai'i as 'Thrill Craft'.

Tom and Darrick listened to both the 90% of supporters in attendance for PWC access and the complaints which were represented by approximately 10% of the meeting participants. Their concerns are valid on both sides, the educational and enforcement issues as well as environmental concerns that affect all boaters, including personal watercraft owners. Personal Watercraft should not be discriminated against due to the vessel type. Proven results in boating education efforts nationwide have seen a vast decrease in injury/accidents and the manufacture designs of four stroke technology have produce the most environmentally friendly boats on the water today. "It was a good thing to hear what the people had to say" says Darrick who operates SEA Adventures to educate his clients in water safety along with enjoying their time on the water.

"Are small boat harbors discriminatory against certain types of craft for provisions, repair or refueling? Harbors are places for vessels to refuel and for boating safety concerns, a refuge. To deny a vessel to come into port for safety purposes, peoples lives are at stake. This becomes a discriminatory issue that can lead to sacrificing lives. People will think 'I don't want to pay a huge fine, or get arrested', which could cause an emergency distress call instead which costs taxpayers thousands upon thousands of dollars and risks additional lives for searches and recovery." States Tom Stone.

Shawn Alladio

Kanalu-K38

www.Kanalu-k38.com
The Hawaiian views 'knowledge' as holistic and multi-faceted: all knowledge is not contained in one place. Knowledge is a merging of the head, heart and the whole body. Knowledge is acquired from many sources. The Hawaiian people have always been aware of their ocean environment and its many moods and rhythms. Ka Makani ‘ula o ke kai – the red wind that belongs to the sea. From this concept of Mālama our kūpuna established the foundation of our culture and our relationship to the ocean. Though similar in some ways to other Pacific island cultures, our unique culture remains very different from any other Pacific isle peoples.
With modern personal watercraft, you should NEVER jump from a car battery if the car is running!

Your altenator is not the cleanest power and can easily cause a voltage spike and damage the ski's electronics.

It would be safe with the engine NOT running, and would eventually fill the ski's battery.

How long it will take depends on how flat the ski battery is. Most are about a 30 amphour battery, so pushing 15 amps, a flat battery would be full in 2 hours. Maybe 20 minutes for a slightly weak one.

Jumper cables support high amperage and would obviously crank the ski immediately. (Get the smaller size ones that have small cable connectors than an average car from jumping PWC to PWC)

Bottom line, if your battery is over a year old (lead acid) and you want to avoid a potential problem for a long trip, install a fresh one and enjoy a trouble free trip.

One last thing, PAY ATTENTION to polarity if you jump a ski. Hooking up the cables backwards will FRY your electronics and be a costly mistake, especially with the newer production units.

Please note this is only a guide if unsure consult your local PW dealer. Always remember to vent (fuel vapour) the PW engine, prior to conecting to battery, compartment to prevent explosions.

K38 UK PWC (Jet Ski) Swiftwater rescue courses.....................

..............the first steps with IRIA Swift Water Technician Course.

K38 UK Instructor Ben Granata has just completed an IRIA Swiftwater/Flood Rescue Technician at the National Watersports Center, Nottingham.
